I’m familiar with a variety of social media platforms, having helped to launch and maintain The Roanoke Times’ presences on Twitter and Facebook. I helped lead a team of journalists in the Roanoke Times newsroom who took the initiative to author standards and best practices for employees when using social networks. Those guidelines went on to be cited by the American Society for News Editors as an example of standards that are leading the way in the industry.
My experience live-tweeting major events on personal and institutional accounts includes the 2009 hostage standoff at the Wytheville, Virginia post office, the 2009 and 2010 record-breaking winter snowstorms that paralyzed Southwest Virginia, and the 2013 lockdown of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, during which I was interviewed live on CNN and several local media outlets.
