Nasogastric (NG) Tubes

Essentially, a nasogastric tube is a plastic catheter coming up from one's stomach, out of their nose, and taped to the side of their cheek. The tube is placed by sticking it up the nose and down the throat. This feels like you are gagging for a few seconds, and then you cannot feel it at all. NG tubes are most commonly used when a person is having difficulty swallowing or for suction after a procedure.  The doctor can provide nutrition by giving a formula through the tube, or can do the opposite (with suction) after surgery, etc.
